TWENTY-TWO

Tiny white flakes drifted down from the sky, growing thicker and thicker. Snow. It was snowing.

Son of a freaking bitch.

The falling snow was mesmerizing, the tiny crystals swirling and dancing as they made their way to the ground. As more and more accumulated, dread washed over me. I started pacing back and forth, hugging myself tightly.

I didn’t know if I should wake the other to let them know what was happening. It wasn’t like there was anything we could do. We had no control over the weather… no way to stop the snow from falling. Sooner or later, we knew this would happen.

Hudson and Stone hadn’t even finished patching the roof. If the snow persisted, their effort would be for nothing. Water would seep through the cracks, turning the attic into an icy tomb.

Maybe by midmorning, the temperatures would rise and melt the dusting on the ground. But this was Maine, and winter would come whether we were ready or not.

The snow would fall harder, piling up inch by inch until the world was buried beneath its frozen weight. The cold would sink its teeth into every crevice, numbing our extremities and sapping our warmth. We’d be forced to bundle up, layer upon layer, just to keep from shivering. We would all have to stay in the living room by the fireplace, hoping Hudson had enough wood in the garage to keep the fire going until spring.

“Nora?” Stone’s sleep-roughened voice called out. “What are you doing?”

I turned to face him. “It’s snowing.”

Stone grunted as he pushed himself up, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. He crossed the room in a few quick strides, joining me at the window. His warmth radiated against my back as he peered over my shoulder, taking in the wintery scene.

“Shit,” he muttered, his breath tickling my ear. “We need to finish the damn roof.”

I nodded, my stomach churning. The patch job they’d started hadn’t been finished, and now the unexpected snowfall threatened to undo their hard work.

Stone moved away, quickly pulling on his clothes. “I’ll get Hudson.”

“Can you work when it’s snowing?” I asked.

“Hope so. It’s not too bad,” Stone said, drawing in a breath. “Not like we have a lot of choice. Need to do something in case this gets worse.”

I followed him out of the room and down the stairs, our footsteps pounding like a herd of elephants. The house was still quiet, with everyone still asleep and unaware of the weather’s turn.

As we reached the bottom of the stairs, I spotted Jasper slumped in the chair by the window. His head was to the side, eyes closed, clearly having dozed off during his watch.

Stone paused, looking at Jasper. “Should we wake him?”

“I’m up,” Jasper said groggily. “Just resting my eyes for a bit.”

“You can go get some sleep now,” I said, sighing. “I’m up now.”

Jasper barely opened his eyes. “Okay.”

Stone marched down the hallway and approached Hudson’s room. He raised his hand, rapping his knuckles against Hudson’s door. The sound echoed in the quiet house, and I glanced toward the ceiling to see if he’d woken the others.
